1931年、パリ。身寄りのない少年ヒューゴはリヨン駅の時計台の中に隠れ住み、孤独な毎日を送る。そんな彼に大切なのは、亡くなった父親が残した、壊れた“機械人形”。その修理に悪戦苦闘していたヒューゴは駅の構内にあるおもちゃ店で万引きを働き、店主の老人に、人形について書かれた大切な父のノートを取り上げられてしまう。そんなヒューゴだが、老人の養女イザベルと仲良くなり、一緒に機械人形の秘密を探る。

初めて映画館を訪れて以来、映画に夢中になった少年サミー・フェイブルマンは、母親から8ミリカメラをプレゼントされる。家族や仲間たちと過ごす日々のなか、人生の一瞬一瞬を探求し、夢を追い求めていくサミー。母親はそんな彼の夢を支えてくれるが、父親はその夢を単なる趣味としか見なさない。サミーはそんな両親の間で葛藤しながら、さまざまな人々との出会いを通じて成長していく。

くじ引きによりフランス・カンヌのビーチへの旅行とビデオカメラを当てたMr.ビーンだがリヨン駅のカンヌ行列車の前で男に撮影を手伝ってもらったところ、その男を置き去りにしてしまう。列車内には既に男の息子であるステパンが乗車しており、ステパンにカメラを奪われたことでビーンは荷物を失い次の駅で降ろされてしまう。ステパンの父はカンヌ国際映画祭で審査員を務める映画監督・エミールだった。
