イラクの戦場から帰国し、家族と再会したばかりの海兵隊のマイケル。彼は、戦死したアメリカ兵の遺体を、彼らの故郷まで移送する任務に志願する。マイケルが担当するのは、チャンスという名前の若い兵士の遺体。専門家たちによってチャンスの遺体は清められ、遺品もまた洗浄されて棺へと納められてゆく。マイケルはチャンスの家族が住むワイオミング州まで、飛行機や車を乗り継ぎ、十分な配慮のもと丁寧に移送してゆく。
