郊外で穏やかな暮らしを送っていた夫婦の家に、謎の男が訪ねてきた。妻はその男に不信感を抱いていたが、夫は快く迎え入れた。その日から、夫婦の家には代わる代わる訪問者がやってくるようになった。「このままでは何か良からぬことが起こる」という妻の訴えを真剣に取り上げようとしない夫だったが、彼女の不安はやがて現実のものとなった。

主人公のテオ・コンロイは自身の年齢から一回りも離れた若く美しい女優スザンナと結婚をし、娘のエラを授かった。しかしテオに対する世間の風当たりは厳しく、冷ややかな目で見られていた。それは、テオの前妻が入浴中に溺死をするという死に方をしており「テオが妻を何らかの理由で殺害して、事故死に見せかけたのではないか？」という噂によるものであった。テオが妻のスザンナの仕事ぶりを見に行こうと現場に立ち寄った時にも、妻が話を通していたはずなのに噂が原因で立ち入ることを拒否されてしまう。そんな日常に疲れていたある日、コンロイ家はウェールズにある貸別荘で休暇を過ごすことに。娘のエラは初日の夜、人影を見たと不安そうにしているがテオは取り合わなかった。しかしそんなテオにも不可解な怪奇現象は降りかかってくるのであった─。

ジョン・A・ルッソの原作を、CM監督出身のジョージ・A・ロメロが監督した歴史的作品であり、ゾンビ映画の記念碑的作品。全編に横溢するカニバリズムや反モラル的ラストなど当時のタブーに挑戦した内容は、根底に流れる独自のヒューマニズムが制作当時の世相を反映しており、賛否両論あったがロングランを続けた。結果として、ニューヨーク近代美術館にも所蔵されるカルト・クラシックとなっており、アメリカ国立フィルム登録簿に永久保存登録されている。父の墓参りの途中、バーバラと兄のジョニーは生ける屍に襲われる。兄を殺された恐怖と悲しみの中、バーバラは近くの民家に逃げ込む。民家には黒人青年のベンのほか、若いカップル、中年夫婦と大怪我を負ったその娘が集まってくるが、外部との連絡も取れないまま、周囲はゾンビの群れに取り囲まれていた。ドアや窓を塞ぎゾンビの侵入を防いだうえで脱出の方策を探るベンに対し、地下室に籠ることにこだわるハリーが対立する。ゾンビたちが人間を食い殺していることをテレビで知ったバーバラたちは、最寄りの避難所への脱出を試みる。

建築事務所に勤めるジョージ・モンローは42歳の建築デザイナー。父親との確執が原因で、自分の息子ともうまくコミュニケーションがとれなかった。ついには妻にも逃げられ、上司との摩擦から会社もクビになる。挙げ句の果てに医者から余命3ヵ月との宣告を受けてしまう。再婚して幸せに暮らす妻。そしていまだに父を憎み続ける16歳になる息子。ジョージは初めて自分の人生に疑問を感じた。そして、昔からの夢だった自分の家を建て直すことを決意する。最後の夏、ジョージは反発する息子を無理やり手伝わせ、手造りの家を建て始めた……。

サイレント映画期の名作「吸血鬼ノスフェラトゥ」(1922)のリメイク。 19世紀のドイツ。主人公は上司からトランシルヴァニアに住むノスフェラトゥ伯爵との不動産取引をするように命じられる。愛する妻を残してトランシルヴァニアに向かうが、途中に立ち寄った村で「ここから先には悪魔が住んでいる。行かない方がいい」と警告される。真夜中にノスフェラトゥ伯爵の城に到着した主人公は伯爵から歓待されるが、伯爵は主人公の妻の写真に強く興味を頂く。そして主人公の切った指から出た血に吸い付くのだった。契約を済ませ、主人公が目を覚ますとあらゆる扉には施錠がされていて、城の外に出ることは出来なかった。城の中を探索すると、地下室で棺桶の中で眠る伯爵を発見する。そしてその夜、伯爵は土とネズミを入れた幾つもの棺桶を共に一人ドイツを目指す。その姿を城の中から見た主人公は、伯爵が自分の妻を狙っていることを感づく。彼はシーツを結びロープの代わりに城の外に脱出。伯爵を追うのだが・・・

The series was produced by Nordisk Film for Danmarks Radio TV station between the years 1970-77. The series' first director was Ebbe Langberg, then Erik Balling and Tom Hedegaard respectively. The series was conceived by an author team of well-known Danish authors such Leif Panduro, Benny Andersen, and Lise Nørgaard.
