エースは、動物にしか愛情を持てないペット探偵。スーパー・ボウルの開催がせまったある日、出場チームのマイアミ・ドルフィンズのマスコットであるイルカのスノーフレークが何者かに誘拐されてしまった。ドルフィンズの女性社員メリッサは、エースにスノーフレークの捜索を依頼する。エースが最初に犯人として目をつけたのは、大富豪ケンプ。ケンプの屋敷で開かれるパーティーで、やりたい放題好き勝手捜査したけれど、ケンプは犯人ではなかった。しかし、エースはこの時、犯人にたどりつくあるヒントを見つけていた。

ジャック（ジャン=マルク・バール）とエンゾ（ジャン・レノ）は、ギリシャの島で幼なじみとして育つ。やがて二人は成長し、コート・ダジュールで20年ぶりに再会した際、エンゾはイタリアのシチリアで開催されるフリーダイビング大会に参加するようジャックに伝える。同じころ、アンデスで偶然ジャックと出会ったジョアンナ（ロザンナ・アークエット）も、出張を口実にニューヨークからシチリアにやって来る。

60年代の人気TV番組「わんぱくフリッパー」では調教師として活躍したものの、その後はイルカの保護に目覚め、以来30年以上にわたって世界各地でイルカ解放の運動に身を投じているリック・オバリー氏の活動に密着、和歌山県太地町で行われているイルカ漁に対する抗議行動の行方を追っていく。

11歳の内気な少年ソーヤーは、浜辺で大怪我を負ったイルカを発見する。保護されたイルカはウィンターと名づけられ、海洋生物専門の病院で治療を受けるが、傷の状態が悪すぎたため、命を救うために尾びれを切断するしかなかった。海洋生物にとって尾びれを失うことは致命的だが、ソーヤーはウィンターのために人工尾びれを開発することを思いつく。博識の海洋生物学者と熟練の義肢装具士に協力を依頼したソーヤーは、ウィンターが再び泳げるようになるよう奮闘する。

海の生物たちの生態を写したドキュメンタリー。リュック・ベッソン監督による、世界的に人気を博した映画『グレート・ブルー』の姉妹編とも言える作品。
