大学八年生の竹村文哉（オダギリジョー）は、いつの間にか84万円の借金をこしらえていた。返済期限の前日、文哉は借金取りの福原（三浦友和）から、一つの提案を受ける。吉祥寺から霞ヶ関まで歩く福原の東京散歩に付き合えば、借金をチャラにするばかりか、100万円の報酬もくれるというのだ。選択の余地のない文哉はそれを引き受け、井の頭公園の橋の上から、二人の散歩は始まる。初日の調布飛行場で、福原は妻（宮田早苗）を殺してしまい、桜田門の警視庁に自首しに行くための散歩であることを文哉に告げる。一方、福原の妻が勤めていたスーパーでは、彼女の無断欠勤を部長の国松（岩松了）や事務員の仙台（ふせえり）、友部（松重豊）が心配していた。その頃も福原と文哉の散歩は淡々と続いていた。阿佐ヶ谷、新宿などを経て、やがて散歩も四日目を迎えた頃、二人は福原の知り合いである麻紀子（小泉今日子）の家を訪れる。そこに娘役のふふみ（吉高由里子）も加え、擬似家族のような数日を過ごす四人。家族に縁がなく育った文哉の心に、今まで味わったことのない感情がざわついた。まもなく、福原が最後の晩餐に食べたいと言っていたカレーライスが食卓に上がる。その翌日、福原と文哉は霞ヶ関へと足を進め、福原はふっと警察へと入って消える。取り残された文哉は、秋の東京に一人立ちすくむのだった。
