In the heart of Southern England lies a royal forest; a wild and magical place of ancient beauty that’s hardly changed since King William the Conqueror proclaimed it as his hunting grounds some 900 years ago. Stretching down from the famous Salisbury Plains to the rocky shores of the English Channel, the New Forest National Park is the largest and richest lowland wilderness in Britain, home to more ancient woods, mossy mires and rich heathlands than any other landscape in Europe.

A colonel during the 1640s English Civil War gets killed, leaving his four children in the care of their aunt. For fear of their safety the children were sent to a forester's home in the forest. While there they encounter numerous adventures, including assisting King Charles who has also escaped from captivity.

During the English Civil War, four orphans are hidden in the New Forest, eventually becoming involved in a conspiracy to help King Charles, who has escaped from captivity.

Writer and environmentalist, Peter Owen-Jones spends a year in the enchanting landscapes of the New Forest, exploring its wildlife, history and meeting the Commoners, the people whose ancient way of life has helped shape the land since Neolithic times.
