2차 세계대전이 끝난 후, 젊은이들은 각자 자신의 길을 찾아 떠나지만 프레디 퀠(호아킨 피닉스)은 여전히 방황하며 백화점의 사진기사로 살아가고 있다. 자신이 제조한 술에 의존하며 살아가고 있는 프레디는 파티장에서 난동을 부리게 되고, 다음날 그 자리에 있었던 랭케스터(필립 세이무어 호프만)를 만나게 된다. 프레디는 인간의 심리를 연구하는 랭케스터의 실험대상이자 조력자, 친구로서 그의 가족들과 함께 머물게 된다. 하지만 프레디는 랭케스터 역시 자신과 다르지 않은 불완전한 인간임을 깨닫고, 랭케스터 역시 가족들로부터 프레디를 멀리하라는 경고를 받는데...
