오하이오주의 한적한 마을에 살고 있는 소박한 중년 부부 핸리(Henry Clark: 스티브 마틴 분)와 낸시(Nancy Clark: 골디 혼 분)는 어느 날 유럽으로 유학을 떠나는 아들의 배웅을 나간다. 핸리는 장성한 아들을 보고 아버지로서 뿌듯함을 느끼지만 자식들과 더 많은 시간을 보냈던 낸시는 남편과 덩그러니 남겨진 현실에 공허함을 느낀다. 한편, 갑자기 실직한 핸리는 새로운 직장을 찾아 혼자 뉴욕으로 떠날 준비를 한다. 그런데 이 사실을 모르고 핸리와 단란한 여행을 떠나려는 낸시는 무작정 핸리를 쫓아 비행기에 탑승한다. 핸리의 뉴욕행 비행기에 함께 탑승한 낸시는 실수와 해프닝을 연발한다. 중간 기착지 보스턴에 도착한 핸리와 낸시는 짐을 찾던 중 뉴욕행 비행기를 놓치고 만다. 천신만고 끝에 기차역으로 향하지만 그나마도 간발의 차이로 기차도 놓치게 되고, 결국에는 렌트카로 뉴욕에 가기로 하지만...
