뻐꾸기'는 2차 대전 당시 러시아군에게 큰 타격을 입힌 핀란드 저격수들을 일컬었던 말로, 이 영화의 여주인공 이름이기도 하다. 1944년 9월. 제2차 세계대전이 끝나기 며칠 전, 러시아군에게 잡혀있던 핀란드 군 일병 베이코와 소련군 대위 이반은 가까스로 탈출에 성공한다. 그리고 서로 적군이긴 하지만 각자 아군에 쫓기는 신세인 이들은 핀란드 한 농장에 숨어 든다. 그런데 이 두 사람은 사미족인 농장 여주인 아니에겐 적이 아니라 단지 남자에 불과하다.
