크리스마스 임무가 엉망이 되자 패닉에 빠진 크리스마스 요정 래니와 웨인. 웨인은 산타에게 큰일 났다고 생각한 나머지, 자신도 모르게 과거의 다른 유쾌한 실수들까지 털어놓고 만다.

완구 회사의 마케팅 팀장 스캇(Scott Calvin: 팀 알렌 분)은 최근 아내와 이혼하며 혼자 살며 전처 로라(Laura: 웬디 크루손 분)와의 사이에 찰리(Charlie: 에릭 로이드 분)란 아들이 있다. 이혼 후 스캇과 찰리의 어색하고 부자연한 관계는 '희한한' 운명의 장난에 의해 스캇이 산타 클로스가 되어버린 이후부터 따뜻하고 다정한 관계로 바뀌게 된다. 어느 크리스마스 이브, 산타 클로스가 스캇의 지붕에서 떨어져 죽었을 때, 스캇은 그의 옷 속에 간직된 카드의 조항대로 산타의 옷을 입게 된다. 그 순간 스캇과 찰리는 순록이 있는 마차에 이끌려 북극에 도착하게 된다. 그곳에서 이들 부자는 요정들의 대장인 버나드(Bernard: 데이비드 크룸훌츠 분)를 만난다. 버나드는 산타의 옷을 입는 순간, 그 옷을 입는 사람은 반드시 산타의 의무와 책임을 떠맡아야 한다는 조항을 스캇에게 들려준다. 스캇은 갑작스러운 자신의 신분 변화에 황당해 한다. 반면 찰리는 어떠한가? 당연히 날뛰듯 좋아한다. 졸지에 산타가 된 스캇은 그후 12개월 동안 몸무게가 늘더니 급기야 엄청나게 비대해져 버린다. 게다가 아침에 말끔히 면도를 해도 오후가 되면 덥수룩하게 턱수염과 구렛나루가 자라난다. 그는 나름대로 고군분투하며 자신의 모습을 변호하려고 애쓰지만 결국 산타의 모습을 인정하고 만다. 스캇은 찰리, 그리고 여덟 마리의 순록과 함께 산타의 존재를 증명하기 위한, 신나는 모험을 펼친다. 그리하여 마침내 스캇은 진짜 산타가 되어버린다.

북극 요정 마을을 이끌며 행복한 산타 생활을 하던 스콧에게 어느 날 달갑지 않은 소식이 전해진다. '나쁜 어린이 명단'에 아들인 찰리의 이름이 올라왔다는 것과 크리스마스이브까지 아내를 구하지 못하면 산타를 그만둬야 한다는 것! 산타가 자리를 비웠다는 것을 들키지 않기 위해 커티스는 복제 산타를 만들고 스콧은 복제 산타에게 요정 마을을 맡기고 찰리를 만나기 위해 떠난다. 스콧은 찰리를 보살피던 중, 찰리가 다니는 학교의 교장 선생님인 캐롤과 사랑에 빠지고, 본인이 산타라고 밝힌 순간, 자신을 놀린다고 생각한 캐롤은 화를 내며 그를 외면한다. 한편, 복제 산타는 세상에는 못된 아이들 천지라며 아이들 모두에게 석탄을 선물해야 한다고 주장하고, 이 소식을 들은 스콧은 복제 산타의 횡포를 막으려 북극으로 향하는데...

옛날 옛적, 아이들을 사랑하여 크리스마스때마다 선물을 가져다주는 마음좋은 클로스 영감 부부(Santa Claus: 데이빗 허들레스톤 분 / Anya Claus: 쥬디 콘웰 분), 크리스마스날 동네 아이들에게 선물을 돌리다 숲속에서 눈보라를 만나 쓰러졌다 깨다보니 요정의 나라에 와있다. 요정들이 만든 장난감을 세상 어린이들에게 가져다줄 사람을 찾던 중 클로스 영감이 선택된 것이다. 그때부터 클로스 영감은 산타클로스란 이름을 갖게 되고 크리스마스 이브마다 아이들에게 선물을 전해준다. 그일이 산타 혼자의 힘으로 벅차게 되자 팻치(Patch: 더들리 무어 분)를 조수로 뽑는다. 조수 자리를 내놓는 팻치는 산타가 자기를 싫어한다고 생각하며 요정 나라를 떠나 인간 세계로 온다. 산타에게 자신의 솜씨를 과시하고 싶었던 팻치는 악덕 장난감업자 비지(B.Z.: 존 리스고우 분)와 일한다. 한편 고아로 거리에서 사는 조는 산타를 만나고 나서 산타를 믿게 되고 비지의 일가친척인 외로운 소녀 코넬리아(Cornelia: 캐리 케이 하임 분)와 친해진다. 몸이 아파 코넬리아 집에 있던 조는 비지에게 잡히고 코넬리아는 사탕이 터진다는 말을 엿듣고 산타에게 알리는데.

마이클(폴 르 마트 분)은 석유탐사 전문가로 북극 지방 2개 지역에서 시추작업을 펼치고 있었다. 그러는 동안 아내 클로디아(재클린 스미스 분)와 아이들은 난쟁이 '에드'에게 이끌려 산타가 산다는 이상한 나라 북극 마을로 가게 된다. 그곳에서 산타클로스(아트 카니 분)는 B지역에서 석유시추 폭파 작업이 계속될 경우, 북극 마을은 모두 파괴되고 앞으로 산타클로스도, 성탄절 선물도 없어져 버릴것이라는 얘기를 들려주는데...

It was the first film adaptation of an entire Discworld novel. The series soundtrack was also released on CD, but the disc is now out of production.
