Can we ever be modern? Could our art ever be removed from the influence of religion? On meeting Bhabotosh, the biggest star in the Bengali festival of the Mother Goddess Durga these were our natural quests. However, amidst all the heartburn in which he was in, we found in him, an artist who only wanted to be remembered, as one, who had sought the truth of this life. This film immerses itself in that need of his, in his factory, his home, as he works to create that one solo show in his long career as an artist, to bare his soul and its roots, rootless that he had always been.

The latest film by Bangladeshi filmmaker Kamal Ahmed Simon, an architect by training, was awarded the World Cinema Fund grant at the Berlin Film Festival. The film has a unique artistic perspective, the hero and heroine are not completely justified, they have the perseverance of the "watchers", but also the confusion of the "bystanders", and finally pushed to the edge of the edge of no way back, the free explosion, but also touching.

"Notun Projonmer Baul which means The New Generation Baul is my journey into the Baul world, it was made in the year 2003. I was deeply 'effected', by the Baul Philosophy and their Music. Bauls are Mendicants or Bards in search of the, "Moner Manush", or the Man after my heart. They have deep suspicion of all man made boundaries and believe in the religion of mankind. Their world has no Maps or Countries, they believe in the religion of mankind, for them the worshipper and the shrine, reside inside the body and one has to dive deep below to soar beyond. Their songs are very esoteric and deeply spiritual." - Bonnie Chakraborty (Director)
