An Tailliúr Gorm looks at the unique struggle for survival on the small, marginalised Gaeltacht island of Inis Bigil off the Mayo coast. As the only island in Ireland to have been both Protetstant and Irish speaking, it is not surprising that Inis Bigil has developed a character all of its own. However today, with only 23 remaining inhabitants, the islanders now find themselves at a crossroads. Focusing on the story of the island’s most famous inhabitant Padraig Daeid (an tailliúr gorm), the film interweaves past and present, exploring the island’s rich culture and heritage, as it faces into perhaps its greatest challenge yet.

Ocras

Ocras 2006

1

Made to mark the 25th anniversary of one of the most dramatic periods of Northern Ireland history when in 1981 ten men, including elected MP Bobby Sands, starved to death on hunger strike for the right to political status in prison. The events served as a unifying force for Irish nationalists and marked a watershed in the relationship between the British Government and Irish Republicans. The international standing of Margaret Thatcher was affected as condemnation of British intransigence ricocheted around the world. It brought Sinn Féin into electoral politics and greatly influenced their strong electoral position as the largest political party in Northern Ireland today. One of the most extreme protests in prison history is revealed through first-hand accounts of key protagonists and witnesses central to the events of that time. Ocras, made in the Irish language for TG4 in 2006, is similar to The Hunger Strike broadcast earlier that year on BBC Northern Ireland.

Each show explores one subject from it's history through to the present covering 6 or 7 topics (or subheadings) using voxpops and informed opinion to inspire comedy sketches and unflinching rants from numerous created characters. The third series is performed by comedians David McSavage, John Colleary, Pat McDonnell and Dermot McMorrow among others. The topics we are covering this year range from Media and Politics to Christmas and Family.
