The media images of the 1979 revolution are derived from a few sources that are repeatedly rearranged – and can reveal hidden stories and people. Safarian takes a personal look at the events, their cinematic presentation, and the concept of revolution in general: his work coincided with the “Arab Spring” in Egypt and Tunisia. Safarian recognized the same gestures, behavior, and signs: “Crowds fill the streets, burning tires, cars, and buildings; fists, slogans, guns: This is nothing more than a revolution that repeats itself over and over again.” “Conversations with the Revolution” sets out to fathom what the photos and films are really about, what they show exactly.
Experimental animation artist Rose Ansari renders the work of Forough Farrokhzad (1934 – 1967), noted as the first Iranian poet to promote the culture of women in poetry. Ansari shares, “Expressing her thoughts on discrimination and inequality, Forough described Iranian women’s untold suffering. In a letter dated January 2, 1956, Forough wrote, ‘My wish is for Iranian women to be free and equal to men. I am fully aware that my sisters in this country suffer from men’s injustices, and I use half of my art to articulate their pain and anguish.’ Forough’s poetry symbolizes a woman imprisoned by ancient traditions and seeking the light.” Ansari’s film, Another Birth, is titled after Farrokhzad writing, Another Birth, published in 1963.

After the Iranian Revolution of 1979., in accordance with its interpretation of Islamic standards, Iran introduced a mandatory dress code for women. In September 2022, the 22-year-old Iranian kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died in a hospital in Tehran under suspicious circumstances after The Guidance Patrol, the religious morality police of Iran's government, arrested her for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. After her death, the Law Enforcement denied allegations of police brutality. However, eyewitnesses reported she was severely beaten, and leaked medical scans suggest she died due to head injuries received after her arrest. Amini's death rises objections all around the country and results in a series of protests.
