Moon Hunt is filled with magic, mysticism, wisdom and wonder. The story moves so fast that a typical cinemagoer may find it difficult to follow it to understand the core message it delivers. But that is typical of all Handagama creations. Unless you dive into them several times, with patience in mind and heart, you cannot learn of what he says. But once it dawns on you, you will find them rare gems that have been carefully cut and polished for you to enjoy the hidden beauty in them. Till then, Handagama himself is magic, mystery, and wonder.

Ranja along with Vihangi and her mother come to the Colombo city to meet the minister, they've elected to the parliament, to hand over a petition about a factory in their village which poisons village river. All three of them stay at Ranja's childhood friend Jonny's house at Colombo. Meanwhile, a local goon named Swarna and her brother Kalu Vijay involved in many illegal activities in the area with the backing of the minister. One day, Vihangi accidentally collides with Kalu Vijay following which he tries to beat her but is saved by Ranja. Ranja and Kalu Vijay get involves in a heated argument which makes Kalu Vijay angry towards Ranja.

A painter (Kamal Addaraarachchi) has a girl that calls him uncle. She asks for his consent to marry a rich boy. He opposes by saying rich men only care about money. Then he relates his past to the girl. Then the story moves to a flashback. The painter has had a relationship with a girl from a rich family during his youth. He meets her in an art gallery and then gradually develops a relationship which culminates in making her pregnant. Then she requests him to meet her parents and she lies to them that he is a wealthy and rich person. In disgust, he leaves her. Then, after a long time, he finds out that she had lied to marry him. In other words, to get her parents' consent. He ultimately finds that the boy in the story is his son and his fiancée had died at the time of delivery. At the end of the story he commits suicide. At the end of the film the girl finds the painter dead on the floor.
