"Sando to Samantha" is the true story of Sando Willemse, aka Samantha Fox, a black drag queen turned soldier in the South African Defence Force. Sando perfected the art of 'dikvel' - a real thick skinned queen who never let life's challenges get the better of him.

Raw (Rou) follows the slow death of a South African rural town, Nthoroane, by exploring myths, disasters, and miracles surrounding the town’s history. Raw (Rou), which refers to a ‘process of mourning,’ captures the lives and stories of the residents who remain connected to this place. Through a mix of interviews and observation, the legends and truth of the town converge into a newfound reality, marked by stories of aliens, ancestors, and faith. The film explores the history and politics of Nthoroane, from the forcible evictions of black residents due to a coal mining operation in 1991 to the lore surrounding the spiritual qualities of the landmark ‘SR’ stone initials found on the hill overlooking the town. Raw (Rou) is a lamentation on the remnants of a once-thriving South African town in the face of displacement, decay, and the loss of a way of life.

What he found instead was abuse at the hands of other gay men, homophobia from Department of Home Affairs officials as well as the difficulties of navigating the Covid-19 pandemic as a sex worker living in a foreign country. In this short film, Robert speaks with candour about fleeing his homeland, his life in South Africa and his hopes for the future.

The GALA Queer Archive, with the generous support of SAIH, commissioned a short film looking into the experiences of homeless transgender sex workers across Cape Town. In different areas across Cape Town, there are communities of homeless trans sex workers living under bridges, on open fields or wherever they can find a space in which to set up home. The Covid-19 pandemic, South Africa’s national state of disaster and the country being put under lockdown has had significant impacts on these women – and not only financially. (by Karin Tan)
