This fascinating film depicts the Taigana, an unusual tribe of nomads living in the mountainous Hovsgol region of Mongolia, near the Siberian border. Nomadism has deep spiritual meaning for the Taigana; their annual migration represents the cyclical nature of life to them and has profound sacred meanings. All their activities are dictated by the world of the spirits. They believe the valleys and mountains are inhabited by their forefathers and by the Supreme Divinity. The Taigana are entirely dependent on their reindeer. They use the sturdy animals to move along the same paths their ancestors did for hundreds of years. Each family owns ten to seventy reindeer which provide most of the diet of the Taigana. The meat is dried and preserved while the milk is used for drinking and making cheese. The skin is utilized to make clothing for the extremely cold winter.

Key West is located near the southern tip of Florida, not far from Key Largo. In contrast to Key Largo (John Huston, USA 1948), Key West has no need of gangsters to reveal this paradise on earth to be an illusion. Looking back from a distance of nearly 50 years, it is sufficient to reconnect those images which – each in itself – represented a longing view of this paradise: images of boat-like cars sailing down the highway, of bikini-clad girls on the beach, of surfers riding the waves. A moral lesson? Possibly.

Thirty years ago making experimental films, I used a technique which breaks footage into blocks of one second, divides each block into four, re-orders the segments and then re-assembles the footage. As with slowed down frames, the viewer sees how the impression of a moving image is created. But the sense of both movement and stillness, time and no-time, is even stronger. In this video I have reproduced this digitally. The original footage was shot in Cabot Plaza, Canary Wharf, and is a study in colour, texture and pattern, driven by the hurdy-gurdy music of Rémy Couvez.
