Salty

Salty 2002

"Salty" was filmed on location at an old salt mine on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, in the outskirts of the city of Burgas, where Daniel Bozhkov grew up. The video shows the artist licking the edge of a large mound of salt, the size of an Egyptian pyramid. Then he tries to dig a hole with his mouth and bury his head in the muddy ground. He only partially succeeds. An airplane flies behind the pyramid, preparing to land at the airport nearby. [Overview courtesy of 601Artspace]

In 1952, when the settlement was built in the far north of Munich, people from many different nations moved in: Latvians, Russians, Armenians, Poles, Ukrainians, Kalmyks, Sudeten Germans – all so-called displaced persons, people with no chance of returning to their homeland or emigrating after the war. Today, around 2,000 people live here in a truly multicultural society, happy about the tolerance and friendly neighborhood. However, this was once the site of a satellite camp of the Dachau concentration camp: "Living here is both a blessing and a curse."

Interested in performance, and with a background in scenography as well as fine art, Ulla von Brandenburg often brings together the past and the present in her work. In Ein Zaubertrickfilm, the German artist creates a video that draws on the experiments of early cinema. This silent black and white film features the artist’s friends performing a variety of tricks, sight gags and slights of hand, some of which are enhanced due to the manipulations that became possible with the invention of the moving image. Not all of the tricks are successful in conventional terms, but each individual completes their “act” to the best of their ability, often with humor.

According to pop culture mythology, Paris Hilton “invented” the selfie in 2006. In factual terms, Uber and its rideshare model was officially launched in 2010. Mare Tralla’s video precedes - and reflects - both of these cultural landmarks that have since become nouns. In this piece, no words are needed: a woman rides in the backseat, entranced by pulsing rhythms. Through a double-layered image - or perhaps an altered state of mind - we follow the movements of a fleeting moment inside a car.
