„Amerikietiška afera" pasakoja talentingo sukčiaus Irvingo Rosenfeldo (vaidmeniui keliolika kilogramų svorio prisiauginęs aktorius Christian'as Bale'as) ir šalia jo esančių žmonių istoriją ašuntojo-devintojo praėjusio amžiaus dešimtmečių sandūros Amerikoje. Irvingas kartu su savo meiluže ir nusikaltimų partnere Sidne mulkina žmones ir gyvena nerūpestingą gyvenimą, kol vieną dieną jų kelyje pasipainioja FTB agentas Ričis. Sukčiai gauna pasirinkimą: padėti FTB agentui pasodinti keletą kitų nelegalių veikėjų arba atsisėsti patiems. Pasirinkimas aiškus: Irvingas ir Sidnė tampa FTB informatoriais.

Šio filmo įvykiai pasakoja istoriją, nutikusią tarp pirmosios ir antrosios „Pjūklo“ dalies. Sužinojęs apie negailestingą vėžio diagnozę, pagrindinis filmo blogiukas Džonas Kreimeris pasiryžęs padaryti viską, kad išgytų. Išgirdęs apie rizikingą (bet, rodos, veiksmingą) eksperimentinę medicininę procedūrą Meksikoje, Džonas nedvejodamas leidžiasi į kelią. Tačiau jo laukia nusivylimas: netrukus paaiškėja, kad tai – tiesiog apgaulė, besinaudojanti tokių žmonių kaip jis bejėgiškumu, pažeidžiamumu ir viltim. Žinoma, Džonas nėra toks, kaip kiti žmonės. Jo maldos išklausomos su kaupu: du gana stipriai nučiuožę Marčio draugeliai Hansas ir Bilis (Christopheris Walkenas ir Samas Rockwellas) grobia naminius augintinius už išpirką. Tačiau šį kartą jie pagrobia stabilia psichika nepasižyminčio mafijos šulo šunytį. Juokinga situacija? Marčiui – tikrai ne. Erzinti nusikaltėlius gali būti kenksminga sveikatai. Ir visiškai nesvarbu, kad Martis kaip ir „ne prie ko“, vargšui scenaristui tenka daugiau koncentruotis nebe į kūrybines kančias, o į nuosavos gyvybės išsaugojimą. Citizen James is a BBC sitcom that ran for three series between 24 November 1960 and 23 November 1962.
