Istorijos centre – 47 roninai (samurajai be Mokytojo), kurie, netekę savo Mokytojo prisiekia atkeršyti už jo mirtį, nepaisydami už tai jų lauksiančio mirties nuosprendžio. Laukdami tinkamos progos ir regzdami tamsiąsias jėgas nugalėsiantį keršto planą samurajai sutinka Kai – paslaptingą ir aplinkinių išduotą atsiskyrėlį, regis, paties likimo pasirenkamą vienam didingiausių Rytuose įvykdytų žygių. Prisijungęs prie 47 roninų vadeivos Oiši, Kai išdrįsta mesti iššūkį mirčiai ir, lydimas būrio Mokytojo pasekėjų, prisiekia drauge įvykdyti jų misiją. Piktavalio žemvaldžio paversti atsiskyrėliais ir ištremtaisiais 47 roninai, lydimi Kai, leidžiasi į amžiaus žygį, kupiną išbandymų, noro susigrąžinti nuplėštą garbę, nuolatinio mirties alsavimo ir noro kartą ir visiems laikams padėti tašką tamsiųjų jėgų viešpatavimui. Tačiau ar saujelė roninų sugebės pasipriešinti klastingai jėgai, galinčiai pražudyti bet ką, pastojusį jai kelią?..

Taika XVII a. Japonijoje Shoguntatą palaužė karių klanai, išmesdami tūkstančius samurajų iš darbo į skurdą. Garbinga tokio likimo pabaiga pagal samurajų kodą yra ritualinė savižudybė - hara-kiri. Vyresnysis karys Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) siekia būti įleistas į feodalo valdovo namus, kad įvykdytų tą ritualą. Jis sužino apie savo uošvio, jauno samurajaus, kuris ieškojo darbo namuose, likimą, o vietoj to barbariškai buvo priverstas tradicinio hara-kiri su paprastu bambuko peiliuku. Samurajus atsiminimuose pasakoja tragišką savo uošvio istoriją ir tai, kaip jis buvo priverstas parduoti savo tikrąjį kardą ,kad galėtų padėti sergančiai žmonai ir vaikui.

Asmens sargybinis − japonų kino režisieriaus Akiros Kurosavos 1961 m. pastatytas juodai-baltas gangsterių džidai-geki filmas. Vienišas samurajus atvyksta į dviejų nusikaltėlių grupuočių valdomą miestelį, kuriame kenčia silpni ir dori žmonės.

Gal kiek per tradicinis filmas, kaip iš Takashi Miike rankų, „13 žudikų“ jau dabar atrodo, kaip šiuolaikinė filmų apie samurajus klasika. Istorinis filmas (šis, beje, atspindi tikrus įvykius Japonijos istorijoje) žiūrisi kaip pramoginis ne ta prasme, kad yra juokingas ar lengvai pateiktas, bet būtent atvirkščiai – filmo pradžioje rodomi vieno „neliečiamojo“ žiaurumai sukelia autentiškų pasėkmių reakciją, kurią Takashi Miike perteikia aukštumoje – nuo puikaus aktorių ansamblio parinkimo iki kiekvienos scenos užfiksavimo vizualiu operatoriaus darbu. Kone ketvirtadalį juostos trunkanti lemiama kova tarp 13 samurajų ir blogiečių armijos, kaip, tiesą sakant, ir visas filmas, prašosi didžiojo ekrano, bet čia jau ne mūsų valioje…

Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

Sakazaki Iwane is a ronin who spends idle days in Edo. Until a few months ago, he was a promising son and successor to a powerful family in Bungo. He has came back to Edo, where he lived for a while for swordplay training with his two best friends, after a tragedy in the three's home domain—both of the two friends died, one of them killed by Iwane by command of the domain lord's chief retainer. Iwane left his home for Edo, leaving behind his fiancée, a sister of the friend he killed. Eventually, Iwane detects the conspiracy behind the deaths of the two friends and struggles to reform his domain.

Continuing the tradition of the Yojimbo movies, Mifune Toshiro stars as Toge Kujuro, a wandering ronin searching for his own fame and happiness. With a sense of justice, he travels the countryside, with his motley collection of outcasts - a pistol-carrying ronin, a two-bit con artist and woman seeking revenge, following close behind, unwittingly righting wrongs and protecting the common man.
