Tačiau atsikračius protezų paaiškėja, jog jis gali greitai bėgioti ir gerai žaisti amerikiečių futbolą. Per futbolą patenka į koledžą. Vietnamo kare nuo žūties išgelbėja visą kuopą ir tampa didvyriu. Vos pradėjęs žaisti stalo tenisą, sėkmingai apgina armijos garbę. Nuo vaikystės draugauja su mergaite, kurią įsimyli, tačiau atsako sulaukia ne iš karto.
