“Gyvenimas yra gražus” yra kaip du filmai: pirmame pasakojama jauno žydo Guido (Roberto Benigni) istorija. Guido, kaimo prasčiokas, atvyksta į miestelį dirbti pas savo dėdę viešbutyje. Eina 1939-ieji, fašizmas Italijoje vis labiau stiprėja ir pasirodo pirmosios antisemitizmo apraiškos. Tačiau Guido politika nerūpi: jis įsimyli jauną mokyklos mokytoją Dorą (Nicoletta Braschi, tikroji Benigni žmona) ir pasitelkęs visą savo padūkusį žavesį ir sėkmę užkariauja jos ranką ir širdį (nepaisant to, kad Dora jau buvo susižadėjusi). Guido ir Dora sukuria nuostabią šeimą ir jiems gimsta puikus sūnus. Dabar prasideda antras filmas, veiksmas vyksta koncentracijos stovykloje. Guido ir jo sūnus Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini) yra ištremiami. Dora įlipa į ta patį traukinį, tuo įrodydama, kad jai šeima svarbiau už asmeninę laisvę. Tėvas nenori sakyti sūnui, kodėl jie pateko į šitą mirties stovyklą ir kodėl jis negali būti kartu su mama, todėl sugalvoja tokią gudrybę...

Prieš patekdamas į kalėjimą Derekas buvo skustagalvis, vadovavo žiauriai rasistinius nusikaltimus visame Los Andžele dariusiai gaujai. Jo veikla padarė stipria įtaką Deniui. Kalėjime pasikeitęs, nauju žmogumi tapęs Derekas atnaujina ryšius su gauja ir stengiasi sulaikyti Denį nuo žingsniavimo tuo pačiu žiauriu keliu.
