Atsakingas, kruopštus ir sąžiningas žurnalistas Mikaelis Bliumkvistas (aktorius Danielis Craigas) iškelia į viešumą Švedijos milijardieriaus Hanso-Eriko Venerstromo finansines aferas, bet pats stipriai nudega. Pavydžių kolegų išduotas ir neteisingai apkaltintas vyras išeina iš darbo žurnale "Tūkstantmetis" ir skuba kuo greičiau pasislėpti. Tačiau visiškai netikėtas kvietimas susitikti su paslaptingu vyresniu džentelmenu ir solidus honoraras ištraukia jį iš nežinios šešėlių. Žurnalistas sėda į traukinį dorai neįsivaizduojantis ir absoliučiai nenutuokiantis, kokie siaubingi išbandymai laukia žiemiškai šaltoje ir kraupias paslaptis sukaupusioje saloje. Prieš 40 metų jauna mergina Harieta dingo be žinios ir negrįžo. Tuo metu turtingiausios ir įtakingiausios Švedijoje šeimos patriarchas Henrikas Vangeris (aktorius Christopheris Plummeris) jaučiasi įsitikinęs, kad mylimą produkterėčią nužudė labai artimas giminaitis.
