Felisė svajoja tapti baleto šokėja. Nors gyvenimas mergaitės nelepina, ji nepraranda optimizmo ir karštai tiki, kad svajonė vieną dieną išsipildys. Atsiradus progai išvykti į Paryžių, ji nedvejoja nė sekundės. Susiradusi Paryžiaus operos rūmus, Felisė susipažįsta su pastato tvarkytoja Odeta. Vieniša moteris, išgirdusi Felisės istoriją, pasiūlo mergaitei apsigyventi pas ją. Naivios ir geraširdės provincijos mergaitės laukia didžiuliai išbandymai ir nusivylimas: išpaikinti didmiesčio vaikai, susireikšminę suaugusieji ir elementarių baleto pradmenų neturėjimas Felisę varo į neviltį. Nuotaiką praskaidrina netikėtai atrastas naujas draugas: jaunas išradėjas Viktoras, kuris tiki, kad Felisei tikrai pasiseks. Vėl atgavusi pasitikėjimą savo jėgomis, Felisė nusprendžia nepasiduoti, kad ir kaip sunku bebūtų. Pagaliau patekusi į baleto trupę, mergaitė atiduoda visas jėgas, kad pasiektų savo svajonę.

It is adapted from Arthur Kopit's book for his then-unproduced stage musical Phantom, which is based loosely on Gaston Leroux's novel.

The puppets make up the audience: Sir William, a wise old goat; Little Billy, his nephew; and Rudi, a rather boisterous lion. Sutherland first introduces them to the story of each opera. Then, backed by the London Symphony Orchestra and a first-rate cast, she moves onto the opera stage, complete with elaborate sets and elegant costumes.
