Malholando aukštumose, iš kurių atsiveria nuostabus vaizdas į Los Andželą, susiduria du automobiliai. Po šiurpios avarijos išlieka gyva tik viena mergina ilgais juodais plaukais. Prieš pat susidūrimą limuzine kartu važiavę vyrukai grasino ją nužudyti. Mergina (akt. Laura Elena Harring) skuba pabėgti iš įvykio vietos, kol neatvažiavo policijos pareigūnai. Anksti ryte pastebėjusi, kad vieno namo šeimininkai kraunasi savo daiktus į taksi automobilį ir ruošiasi išvykimui, ji prasmunka pro praviras duris į buto vidų.

Vienu ilgu kadru nufilmuota siaubo juosta apie itin nevykusį vakarą. Užsukęs pas narkotikų prekeivį Romainas išbando naują narkotiką – „bus pats tas“ prieš vakarėlį. Išriedėjęs į gatvę vaikinas pamato ligoninės drabužiais apsirengusią merginą. Jeigu vairuoji apsvaigęs, policijos kviesti nederėtų, todėl Romainas merginą paveža pats. Tačiau mergina atsako klyksmais, kumščiais ir pražiota burna be dantų. Ar tai susidūrimas su beprote, ar narkotikų sukelta haliucinacija?

Turtingas gražuolis Deividas pasiekė gyvenime tiek, kiek kitas galėtų tik pasvajoti: geras darbas, prabangios mašinos, pinigai ir merginos, kurios tik ir laukia jo skambučio. Po avarijos Deividas išgyvena, bet jo gražus veidas lieka neatpažįstamai subjaurotas. Jaunuolis puola į paniką ir depresiją, bet greitai viskas pasikeičia į gerąją pusę. Gydytojas pasiūlo jam atlikti plastinę veido operaciją, o žavioji Sofia prisipažįsta jį mylinti. Tačiau netrukus blogi bei nenuspėjami dalykai ir vėl prasideda. Deividas lieka vienas ir dar apkaltintas žmogžudyste.

Paauglę prieš jos valią patėvis uždaro į psichiatrinę ligoninę. Tačiau ji neprarado troškimo gyventi. Tiesiog jai tenka griebtis kitokių būdų, kad atgautų buvusį gyvenimą: ji pasitraukia į fantazijų pasaulį. Čia jos neriboja nei laikas, nei erdvė - ji laisva keliauti ir daryti ką nori. Merginos protas ištrina ribas tarp fantazijos ir realybės. Prasideda neįtikėtini nuotykiai. Tačiau didžiausias jos noras - susigrąžinti laisvę, pasprukti iš ligoninės.
