Quentin‘as Tarantino neabejotinai yra vienas originaliausių mūsų laikų kino kūrėjų. Kiekviena nauja jo juosta sukelia šurmulį visame pasaulyje. Ne išimtis ir šis, devintasis jo filmas, kuriame tikrovė susipina su išmone, o realiai gyvenę žmonės paklūsta nežabotai režisieriaus fantazijai. 1969-ųjų Los Andželas, pati Holivudo „Aukso amžiaus“ pabaiga. Juostos centre – pagal žymiojo aktoriaus Burt‘o Reynolds‘o paveikslą sukurtas pagrindinis herojus Rikas Daltonas ir jo geriausias bičiulis bei dubleris Klifas Butas. Kentėdami nuo mažėjančios vaidmenų pasiūlos ir desperatiškai siekdami išlaikyti ankstesnį statusą bei gyvenimo būdą, vyrukai įsipainioja į pačias neįtikėtiniausias istorijas, kurių fone – ir būsimasis žudikas Čarlis Mensonas, ir jo nužudytoji aktorė Šeron Teit, ir daugybė kitų to meto žvaigždžių.

Ankstyvajame Holivude vienų veikėjų laukė didžiuliai užmojai ir staigi sėkmė iškilimas, o kitų – siaubingas nuosmukis ir viską apimantis egzistencinis skurdas. Filmas pasakoja apie ryškius personažus ir jų neeilinius nuotykius „laukiniame“ Holivude.

1930-ųjų Prancūzija. Hugo – dvylikametis našlaitis, gyvenantis traukinių stotyje. Kasdien girdėdamas dundančius traukinio bėgius vaikinas gyvena su alkoholiku dėde ir beprotiškai ilgisi gaisre žuvusio tėčio – talentingo laikrodininko. Kadaise tėtis sūnui parodė robotą – metalinę žmogaus figūrą, sėdinčią užstalėje ir laikančią plunksną. Nuo tos dienos mažasis Hugo susižavėjo neįtikėtinu mechanizmu, o po tėčio mirties ryžosi bet kokia kaina išsiaiškinti roboto veikimo principą ir priversti jį judėti. Kartą, bėgdamas nuo piktai nusiteikusio stoties policininko Hugo susiduria su Izabele – keista mergaite, po kaklu nešiojančia raktą, idealiai tinkantį Hugo lėlei-robotui. Veikdami kartu vaikai siekia įminti roboto paslaptį. Izabelės rakto dėka jiedu įkelia koją į kitą realybę ir patenka į nuostabų pasaulį. Džiaugdamiesi savo atradimu vaikai suvokia, jog išradimas domina ne tik juos. Tikrieji pavojai jau alsuoja Hugo ir Izabelei į nugarą.
