Per dienas po Giltines viruso susekimo milijonai yra užkresti Škotijoje, žudiko ligos namineje velenoje. Vyriausybe neturi jokio pasirinkimo, kaip tik paskelbti šali 'karšta zona' ir izoliuoti liaudi.

Žmoniją neseniai gąsdinę paukščių bei kiaulių gripai prieš šį naująjį virusą atrodo tarsi juokinga infekcija. Naujojo viruso užkratas sklinda oru arba yra perduodamas prisilietus prie infekuotojo. Ligonio gyvybę virusas pasiglemžia per keletą dienų, o norint išgyventi, rekomenduojama nieko neliesti ir net su niekuo nekalbėti. Siekdami įveikti šį mirtiną virusą, jėgas suvienija geriausieji pasaulio medikai. Tačiau ir jie šįkart atrodo pasimetę ir bejėgiai: vakcinos nuo šio viruso nėra, ir niekas nežino, kaip gydyti užsikrėtusiuosius. O paprasti žmonės tuo tarpu bando išgyventi griūvančioje visuomenėje, kurioje panika sklinda greičiau nei pats virusas...
