Antrojo pasaulinio karo belaisvis vokiečių kareivis Klemensas Forelas nuteisiamas kalėti darbo stovykloje tolimajame Sibire. Po ketverių metų darbo kasyklose jis pabėga iš stovyklos (1949 m.) ir bando grįžti namo pas žmoną ir vaikus. Trejus metus jis keliauja per Sibirą. Tai 14 000 kilometrų odisėja, vykstanti dykumos ir nederlingo kraštovaizdžio fone, kur tyko pavojai (tiek nuo gyvūnų, tiek nuo žmonių). Nuolat kovodamas su blogiausiais gamtos padariniais, Forelas žingsnis po žingsnio keliauja link Prūsijos ir taip trokštamos laisvės. Kartais važiuodamas traukiniais, kartais plaukdamas valtimi, o dažniausiai eidamas pėsčiomis, jis niekada nežino, ar kitas jo žingsnis nebus paskutinis. Jo ieškantis Kamenevas visada seka iš paskos, todėl ne kartą atrodo, kad Forelas vėl bus sugautas...

Fumijis Takemura neturi šeimos ar draugų. Negana to, kad yra vienišas, ambicijų neturintis studentas, Fumijį dar slegia 800,000 jenų skola.
