There is very little information available online on this little gem, the first 'feature-length' film shot exclusively in Iceland by an Icelandic director, the pioneer Loftur Guðmundsson. Director and crew travelled all around the country with the ambitious goal of documenting all the aspects of the local life at the time. Fishing plays an important role (being then, by far, the number one national industry); one can also witness the humble beginnings of 'city-life' in the capital, one of the first (or was it the very first?) cars driving in Iceland, beautiful pastoral shots of farm-lands, ladies posing in the national costume, as well as fighters indulging in the national sport, 'glyma'. The 21st century traveller will be able to recognize a number of landmarks. The images are often naive, genuine, and captivating. In my opinion one of the most valuable Icelandic films. --Ewolve

A social film with high melodrama, concerning a peasant (Shantaram) who loses his land to a greedy money-lender and moves to the city where he becomes a mill worker. Taking its cue from the realist tradition, the film counterposes an idyllic rural life (destroyed but the greedy money-lender who uses forged papers to steal the peasant's land) with the harsh city life. The shot of a hut accompanied by a howling dog are regarded as one of the most memorable moments of Indian cinema to date.

Hands pick it up and a shape is cut out of the paper very quickly. When it is turned around it reveals itself to be Jerry. He blinks and yawns then gets angry at the hand that is holding him. The animators other hand pulls his tail. Jerry yelps in pain. He says (in a speech bubble) "I've had enough of this dog's life! I'm going to commit suicide!!"

Jerry throws away the sign and says, "No, but it is going to be mine!". Artist talks to the cartoon: "What do you want for a birthday present?". Jerry thinks about it and decides that he wants a gramophone.
