Race legende Sonny Hayes wordt uit zijn pensioen gehaald om een worstelend Formule 1-team te leiden, en een jonge hotshot-coureur te begeleiden, terwijl hij nog een kans op glorie najaagt.

Er heerst nog steeds een zekere dreiging vanuit Cypher, die haar grootse plan aan het opzetten is. Dominic Toretto en zijn naasten worden daarnaast bedreigd door Dante, maar met een verleden als dat van Dominic lijken zijn andere vijanden hem ook niet vergeten. Tevens doet de mysterieuze Tess haar intrede. Aan welke zijde zij staat is nog niet duidelijk.

Hoewel zijn generatie meer en meer van het circuit wordt verdreven, wil Bliksem nog lang niet stoppen met racen. Als hij onverwachts wordt verslagen door eerstejaars Jackson Storm, gaat hij op zoek naar een nieuwe kans.

Bliksem McQueen is een ambitieuze nieuweling in de racewereld die onderweg is naar de finale van de Pistons Cup in California. Wanneer hij onverwachts een omweg moet maken dor het slaperige Route 66 stadje: Radiator Springs, ontdekt hij dat het leven niet om de finishlijn gaat maar om de reis. Onderweg leert hij ongewone karakters kennen; Sally, een chique Porsche uit 2002, Doc Hudson (een Hudson Hornet uit 1951 met een mysterieus verleden) en Takel, een roestige maar betrouwbare sleepwagen. Zij helpen Bliksem McQueen te realiseren dat er belangrijkere dingen in het leven zijn dan prijzen, reputatie, roem en sponsors.

'Wreck-it Ralph' is de slechterik in een videospel, maar zou graag net zo geliefd zijn als de perfecte 'Fix-It Felix' uit hetzelfde spel. Dus zodra hij hoort van een nieuw spel met in de hoofdrol de geliefde Sergeant Calhoun, besluit Ralph het spel in te sluipen met slechts één doel: winnen en het behalen van een medaille. Maar als snel gaat het helemaal mis als er in het spel een dodelijke vijand zijn intrede doet. Ralphs enige hoop is 'Vanellope von Schweetz', een kleine 'fout' in het spel dat het misschien voor elkaar kan krijgen om van Ralph een goede jongen te maken.

Jann Mardenborough wint als tiener dankzij zijn Gran Turismo game skills een reeks Nissan-wedstrijden en wordt zo een echte professionele autocoureur.
