Parijs in 1930. Na het schandaal rond L'Age d'Or krijgt Luis Buñuel het voorstel om een documentaire te maken in de zeer arme regio Las Hurdes in Spanje. Zijn vriend Ramón Acín koopt een loterijkaartje en belooft de filmer dat hij hem financieel zal steunen in zijn aanstaande film in het geval van het winnen van de loterij.
Mahito, een jongen die de dood van zijn moeder probeert te verwerken, stapt in een wereld die bewoond wordt door zowel de levenden als de doden. In deze wereld vervaagt de dood en herrijst het leven in een nieuwe gedaante.

Deze keer wist hij te ontsnappen en keerde hij terug naar de sloppenwijk waar zijn moeder woonde. Ze heeft net haar man verloren, die mogelijk dronken is gevallen op een bouwplaats. Polín hangt rond, pleegt een paar kleine diefstallen, ontmoet vrienden. De natuur geeft hem het meeste plezier, of het nu gaat om een duik in de rivier of een nachtelijke rit met het paard van zijn vriend Fabián.
Osamu en zijn zoon Shota stelen regelmatig uit winkels en komen op een dag de jonge Yuri tegen, die in het gure weer buiten moet overleven. Osamu's vrouw Nobuyo aarzelt aanvankelijk om het meisje in hun midden op te nemen, maar bindt uiteindelijk in.
