Ben Whittaker is een 70-jarige weduwnaar die ontdekt dat met pensioen zijn helemaal niet zaligmakend is. Hij grijpt zijn kans om weer mee te kunnen doen en een doel te hebben in zijn leven. Hij besluit senior stagiair te worden bij een online fashion website, opgericht en geleid door Jules Ostin.

De film volgt het liefdesleven van acht Londenaren in de aanloop naar kerst. De nieuwe premier wordt verliefd op het meisje dat hem thee brengt, terwijl zijn zus huwelijksproblemen heeft. Een vader en zijn stiefzoon moeten het verlies van de moeder verwerken terwijl de zoon tot over z'n oren verliefd is op een klasgenote.

Simon, een onbetekenende man, ziet zijn leven helemaal veranderen wanneer James, zijn exacte fysieke dubbelganger, opduikt en in zijn bedrijf komt werken. In tegenstelling tot Simon heeft James veel zelfvertrouwen, charisma en kan goed omgaan met vrouwen. Simon is begrijpelijkerwijs van slag door deze situatie en het duurt dan ook niet lang vooraleer hij het gevoel krijgt dat James zijn leven overneemt...

Het zakenleven kan keihard zijn. Wie stijgt op de maatschappelijke ladder, kan er in een onbewaakt ogenblik vanaf geduwd worden. De mooie Kris Bolin (Lara Flynn Boyle) start haar carriere als een uitzendkracht (temp) bij Mrs Appleby's Koekjesfabriek. Zij heeft dodelijke ambities, en haar baas Peter Derns Timothy Hutton is te druk en gestresst om haar daarbij te helpen. Maar Kris vindt desondanks haar weg naar de top, al laten enkele topmanagers door de moordende onderlinge concurrentiestrijd het leven.

Richard Summer en Bunny Watson werken op dezelfde afdeling. Hun opvattingen over de manier van werken verschillen heel erg van elkaar. Ondanks hun meningsverschillen worden ze verliefd op elkaar.

Bud Baxter heeft als medewerker van een verzekeringsmaatschappij moeite om het hoofd boven water te houden. Hij verzint een snelle manier om hogerop te komen: zijn appartement verhuren aan de hoge bazen, waar ze vervolgens hun vriendinnetjes mee naar toe kunnen nemen.

Emily Jenkins is een sociaal werkster voor families met problemen. Ze heeft allerhande soorten van ellende wel gezien, maar haar ontmoeting met de 10-jarige Lilith is wel erg bijzonder. Het meisje wordt mishandeld door haar ouders en Emily is bang dat ze haar zullen vermoorden. Emily probeert van alles om het meisje uit huis te plaatsen en neemt haar ondertussen zelf in huis, maar na verloop van tijd ontdekt Emily dat de zaak wellicht iets gecompliceerder ligt.

Een groep kantoormedewerkers besluit een feestje te houden in het kantoorgebouw. Ze willen daar onder meer wat drugs hebben. Hun gesprek over dit onderwerp wordt afgeluisterd door Joe Vickers, wat nogal jammer voor hen is, aangezien Joe Vickers een politieagent is. Nog ongelukkiger is het feit dat Vickers ook een ondode psychotische satanist is, en in plaats van hen te arresteren, zal hij ervoor zorgen dat niemand de partij levend verlaat...

In een Orwelliaanse toekomst wordt de bevolking compleet gecontroleerd door de staat. Sam Lowry is een ambtenaar die op een dag een fout ontdekt in één van de papieren die zijn kantoor passeert. Deze fout leidt tot de arrestatie van een compleet onschuldige man.

Kanji Watanabe is een kantoormedewerker die, net als al zijn collega's, niets uitvoert op z'n werk. Dan ontdekt hij op een dag dat hij maagkanker heeft en nog maar een paar maanden heeft te leven. Hij besluit vervolgens om deze laatste maanden te gebruiken om het nut van zijn leven te ontdekken.
