Zed is een Britse rapper met Pakistaanse roots die op het punt staat zijn eerste internationale tournee te starten. Hij besluit naar zijn thuis in het Verenigd Koninkrijk te reizen om er zijn familie na twee jaar een bezoekje te brengen. Daar wordt hij door een auto-immuunziekte getroffen. Zijn gezondheid gaat er in de volgende dagen hard op achteruit waardoor zijn doorbraak in het gedrang komt. Bovendien wordt hij geteisterd door hallucinaties.

Miljoenen moslims vluchten naar Lahore in de nieuw opgerichte staat Pakistan, ingegeven door de opdeling van Brits-Indië.

Based on the novel by Bhisham Sahni, Tamas is an epic drama set against the backdrop of riot-stricken North India on the eve of Partition in 1947. Nathu, an outcast, is hired to kill a pig, whose carcass he’s later appalled to find in front of the mosque. A riot follows and, ridden with guilt, Nathu takes his ailing mother and pregnant wife and leaves town.
