Rocky Balboa is een tweederangs bokser uit Philadelphia. Hij is een mislukking: hij woont in een afgedankt appartement en als bijbaantje is hij een inner van schulden. Ook probeert hij indruk te maken op de ietwat verlegen Adrian, zijn grote liefde.
'The Fighter' vertelt het verhaal van "Irish" Mickey Ward, een vechter uit Lowell, Massachusetts die op het punt staat zijn handschoenen in de ring te gooien, als zijn halfbroer, voormalig bokser Dicky Eklund, na een gevangenisstraf weer in zijn leven komt.

Nadat gebleken is dat de Russische bokser Ivan Drago Rocky permanente hersenbeschadiging heeft toegebracht, is Rocky gedwongen om te stoppen. Wanneer hij thuiskomt komt hij er achter dat al zijn geld gestolen is. Rocky besluit een jonge bokser te gaan trainen. Hij kan echter niet op tegen de hoge salarissen die de jongen aangeboden worden door andere managers.
Film over Jake La Motta die terugkijkt op zijn carrière. In 1941 wilde hij meer bereiken en zich voorbereiden op zwaargewicht boksen. Hij stond bekend als een bokser die ongelofelijk gewelddadig was en daarom ook niet te stoppen was in de ring.
Nadat hij de bokswereld heeft gedomineerd, is het Adonis Creed zowel in zijn carrière als in zijn gezinsleven voor de wind gegaan. Wanneer jeugdvriend en voormalig bokstalent Damian weer opduikt na een lange gevangenisstraf, wil die graag bewijzen dat hij een kans verdient in de ring. De confrontatie tussen de voormalige vrienden is meer dan alleen een bokspartij. Om de rekening te vereffenen moet Adonis zijn toekomst op het spel zetten om het op te nemen tegen Damian, een bokser die niets te verliezen heeft.
