Terwijl Andy op zomerkamp is, ziet speelgoedverzamelaar Al McWiggin Woody liggen in de tuin en besluit hem mee te nemen. Al snel wordt Woody gemist door zijn kameraad Buzz Lightyear, die een reddingsactie op touw zet. Voor het eerst moeten de speelgoedvrienden de echte wereld verkennen om Woody te redden.

1996, L.A. Een psychotische crimineel heeft 30 mensen gegijzeld in een met explosieven gevuld gebouw. Een jongen uit New York wordt door een rijke familie opgenomen nadat zijn moeder is omgekomen bij een bomaanslag op het Metropolitan Museum of Art. In paniek steelt hij 'Het puttertje', een schilderij dat hem uiteindelijk in een wereld van misdaad brengt.

Larry Daley gelooft, ondanks zijn tot op heden ongelukkige leven, dat er iets groots voor hem staat te gebeuren. Dat blijkt wel als hij aangenomen wordt als nachtwaker bij het "Museum of Natural History". Tijdens zijn diensten beginnen er vreemde dingen te gebeuren. Gladiatoren en cowboys voeren een nachtelijke strijd terwijl een Neanderthaler zijn eigen display verbrandt, en de T-rex iedereen laat zien waarom hij het meest gevreesde roofdier is uit de geschiedenis.

Wanneer de beruchte schurk Megamind per ongeluk zijn aartsrivaal Metro Man vermoordt, verliest hij de zin van het leven. Zijn hele leven zat hij achter z'n vijand aan en de vijand achter hem. Nu dit domme ongelukje zijn leven veranderd heeft, creëert hij een nieuwe superheld genaamd Titan. Probleem is dat deze ook de nummer één schurk van de stad wil zijn. Hoe moet het nu?

Larey Daley weet dat een Egyptisch tablet uit de tijd van de farao's het geheim is achter de tot leven komende museumstukken in het "Museum of Natural History". Maar wanneer dit magisch tablet tekenen van corrosie begint te vertonen, reist Larry met onder andere Farao Ahkmenrah, Teddy Roosevelt en Attila de Hun af naar het "British Museum" in Londen om het te redden van zijn ondergang.

Als het Museum of Natural History gesloten wordt vanwege renovaties, moeten de museumstukken overgebracht worden naar het beroemde Washington Museum. Larry Daley komt terecht in de zogenaamde Smithsonian-afdeling van het museum, waar hij de opdracht krijgt om een aantal museumstukken te redden, omdat deze verkeerd zijn verscheept. Eenmaal geïnfiltreerd in het Smithsonian, ziet Larry dat er weer leven zit in alle museumstukken, waaronder Amelia Earhart, Al Capone en vele andere historische personen.

Monster Squad is a television series that aired Saturday mornings on NBC from 1976-1977 that is unrelated to the later movie of the same name. The series stars Fred Grandy as Walt, a criminology student working as a night watchman at "Fred's Wax Museum". To pass the time, Walt built a prototype "Crime Computer" hidden in a large stone sarcophagus near an exhibit of legendary monsters. When Walt plugged in his computer, "oscillating vibrations" brought to life the wax statues of Dracula, the Wolfman who here was named "Bruce W. Wolf", and Frankenstein's Monster who was referred to as "Frank N. Stein" in the credits. The monsters, wanting to make up for the misdeeds of their pasts, became superhero crimefighters who used their unique abilities to challenge and defeat various supervillains. In most episodes, Walt would send the monsters out to investigate crimes and fight the villains while monitoring the activities from the wax museum via the Crime Computer, presumably because his job required him to be at the wax museum at all times. However, Walt would sometimes join the climactic battle with his comrades in some episodes and come to the rescue when needed.
