Zes dagen geleden werd astronaut Mark Watney een van de eerste mensen die een voet op Mars zette. Nu is hij er zeker van dat hij de eerste zal zijn die er zal sterven. Na een zandstorm blijft hij alleen achter.

Het is nu het jaar 2577 en het eerste bemande schip naar Mars is op de planeet geland en de zes bemanningsleden zijn klaar voor hun missie. Maar wat ze vinden zijn gigantische gemuteerde mensachtige kakkerlakken met ongelooflijke fysieke kracht. De bemanningsleden worden gemakkelijk weggevaagd, maar niet voordat ze een transmissie terug naar de aarde hebben gestuurd.
