In India is liefde in het openbaar verboden. Narayan, de directeur van een school gelooft hier sterk in. Hij is op de hoogte dat er drie stelletjes zijn binnen de school en heeft hier totaal geen gevoel en respect voor.

In het Franse dorpje Lansquenet heeft de tijd stilgestaan, totdat de mooie jonge Vianne Rocher en haar dochtertje in dit vriendelijke maar ingedutte plaatsje een chocolaterie opent. Ze blijkt over een magische gave te beschikken door voor elke inwoner de juiste soort chocolade te kiezen. De streng gelovige, stugge dorpelingen smelten voor haar, en iedereen lijkt open te bloeien.

Een zakenman heeft nogal traditionele opvattingen wat betreft het huwelijk, maar weet zijn vrienden en familie altijd te helpen met goede adviezen betreffende hun huwelijk. Wanneer zijn eigen dochter echter zomaar impulsief trouwplannen maakt, zonder zijn toestemming of hulp te vragen, is hij niet bepaald blij.

Hij is een melkman in Anatevka, een dorp in harmonie met vele tradities die ervoor zorgen dat het leven gebalanceerder is dan een violist op een puntdak. Hij heeft 5 dochters en een koppelaarster heeft nog geen bruidegom voor hen gevonden, dus heeft hij het niet breed.

Bess, een naïef, kinderlijk meisje dat gelooft dat ze in direct contact staat met God, is opgevoed in een streng religieus Schotse plattelandsgemeenschap aan het begin van de jaren '70. Wanneer zij verliefd wordt op Jan, een arbeider op een olieplatform en man van de wereld, trouwen zij tegen de wil van de dorpsgemeenschap toch met elkaar.

Dit drama speelt zich af in 1926, toen de Japanse traditie veel sterker was, en kijkt naar de innerlijke werking van een klein gezin, vooral de relatie tussen een zus en een broer.

Ze wil hem namelijk hoe dan ook bewijzen dat zij wel degelijk het nieuwe stamhoofd kan worden, ook al is dat tegen duizenden jaren van tradities in....

Once Were Warriors is het verhaal van een kansarme familie aan de smerigste rand van de stad. Het is dat deel van de stad waar het werk van een welzijnswerker de druppel op de gloeiende plaat is, waar werkloosheid heerst, mensen het zicht op verbetering kwijt zijn en hun toevlucht zoeken in drank en drugs.

Niet veel later sneakt Jess bij elke mogelijkheid het huis uit om te werken aan haar dribbels, afrondingen en vrije trappen. Wanneer Jess' ouders ontdekken waar ze mee bezig is slaat de vlam natuurlijk in de pan. Ondertussen is Jules moeder Paula doodsbang dat Jules voetbalobsessie haar verandert in een schreeuwende lesbie.

Sameer reist van Italië naar India om daar zangles te krijgen van de bekende zanger Darbar. Hij wordt aanvankelijk vijandig ontvangen door Darbar's dochter Nandini. Maar daar komt snel verandering is wanneer beiden verliefd worden op elkaar. Nandini's ouders hebben echter voor haar een huwelijk op het oog met de jonge advocaat Vanraj. Met een gebroken hart keert Sameer terug naar Italië...

Een van Sicilië afkomstige familie besluit zich in Amerika te vestigen in de hoop op een beter bestaan. De 'nieuwe' wereld blijkt echter minder toegankelijk en rooskleurig dan hen is voorgedaan.
