Filmen handler om en oppvekst på Rykkinn i Bærum, og starter med at den unge Nikolaj kaster en flaske som treffer skolens rektor under en 17.mai-tale i 1979. Sønner av Norge er en film om opprør, pønkrock, drabantbyhelvete, og konflikten mellom hippier og pønkere. Men mest av alt er det en historie om et uvanlig far-sønn-forhold, og styrken i de båndene vi av og til gjør vårt beste for å rive over.
