Presteseminarstudenten Michael Kovak går motvillig på eksorsismeskole i Vatikanet. Mens han er i Roma, møter Michael en uortodoks prest som introduserer ham for den mørkere siden av sin tro, og avdekker djevelens rekkevidde selv til et av de helligste stedene på jorden.
