The Loser Takes it All tells the story of Israeli band Ping Pong. Their song "Be happy" (Sameach) was chosen to the 2000 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, Sweden. The band insists to raise Israeli and Syrian flags on stage in their song as a symbol to the peace Israeli and Syrians are wishing for. Head of the delegation and Israeli broadcast association threaten that the band will not perform.

The absurdist comedy-drama is centred around a Shmelky puppet (something like a Jewish version of the Muppet Show heroes), which experiences an identity crisis traditional for comedy actors: he thinks of himself as a grand dramatic artist and doesn’t want to sing songs about Shabbat and Mitzvahs in a children’s show anymore. Instead, he wants to perform in a hideous one-man show that he wrote. After his attempts to get rid of the role he is stuck in fail, Shmelky falls into despair - until the entire country, brought up on his simple shows, says to him: “In our complicated world the Chosen People very much need a purple puppet who tells them about Mitzvahs.”
At the heart of this film are two extraordinary characters. It is a mystery how director Hillel Rate managed to persuade them to let the camera so close, to invite the filming crew into their home and share their most private moments. Moshe Mishuris, a 37-year-old lonely Ashkenazi Jew came from Russia with his elderly father, and now they live together in one tiny apartment. Their main source of income is donations from the audience of their YouTube channel, where they talk about Judaism in Russian. Moshe is single, he had proposed to different women twice, but it didn’t work out. When he goes to the matchmaker and it’s hard to tell whether he is hoping to get together with someone or is fearing it. The most unexpected thing is that the film is open-ended. The director leaves Moshe perplexed, but not alone because in any case he stays with his father, a man who is almost a saint and dedicated his entire life to his faith.

For most women, “fluchkes” (a Yiddish word referring to flabby underarms) are something to “kvetch” about. For the group of female seniors, between the ages of 72 and 82, creating and preparing for a dance performance, fluchkes are just another badge of honour in a life lived to the fullest. Comfortable in front of the camera, each of these women speaks candidly about aging, sex, and relationships. Director Ofer Inov follows this group of energetic women through a year of rehearsals—through moments of hardships and self-doubt as well as moments of camaraderie, inner-strength and success.
