The story of a young couple, who, despite experiencing financial difficulties, want to present themselves with gifts on Christmas Day.

The action of the film takes place during the First World War. Jakub lives in a village on the border of two partitions: Austrian and Russian. Here he marries Magda. When the war breaks out, Jakub goes to the front. He has to fight not only with the enemy, but also with Poles from other partitions.

Magda breaks up with Michał, the father of her child, and returns to Poznań. There she meets the composer Adam, but her previous partner reappears in her life.

Established by peasants in an area within a huge farm belonging to a landlord near the town of Kalisz, the project was turned into a modern enterprise admired by many visitors from abroad. He takes his discovery to the nearest police station. More misfortunes begin to fall on his head.
