Filmul prezintă povestea lui Balthazar Blake, un maestru vrăjitor și ucenic al faimosului Merlin, care vrea să salveze Manhattan-ul contemporan de planurile malefice ale inamicului său, Maxim Horvath, personaj interpretat de Alfred Molina. Deoarece nu îi poate face față lui Horvath singur, Blake îl recrutează pe timidul descendent al lui Merlin, Dave Stuller, interpretat de Jay Baruchel. Cu toate că la început Dave pare sa fie neîndemânatic și mediocru în arta magiei, își dovedește în cele din urmă adevăratul potențial de erou și puterile moștenite de la predecesorul său. Twelve-year-old Bastian Balthazar Bux had lost the wonderful imagination he had as a child somewhere between growing older, watching TV, going to school and playing with his Gameboy. But when his mother dies suddenly, Bastian's limitless imagination is reborn. Bastian comes across a magical book, 'The Neverending Story,' in a curious little bookstore. Inspired by the book, Bastian creates an enchanted world called Fantasia, inhabited by dragons, dark knights and assorted heroes and villains.

Inspired by the popular Harry Potter book and movie series, the show presents a trio of "wizards-in-training" at an enchanted private school run by Miss Crystalgazer. Cassy is a junior witch, Gus is a half-elf/half-human junior wizard, and Verne is a promising "mortie", i.e. a non-magical human. With the guidance of the talking Ultimate Book of Spells (aka UBOS), the three have to battle the evil wizard Zarlak, who's trying to steal all of the world's spells.

In a vast and mysterious multiverse with fantastic alternative realities, a metaphysical entity has a whole plan behind it, in order to protect the timeline of an island using a book that can see the past, present and future as if it were a full script.
