Există două lumi: prima, cea în care trăim zi de zi, și cea de-a doua, deloc cunoscută, paralelă cu cea reală. Una este vis. Cealaltă este Matricea. Neo încearcă din răsputeri să afle adevărul despre acea lume despre care a auzit vorbindu-se doar în șoaptă, lume misterioasă și plină de necunoscut. Dar ce este Matricea? În 2045, omenirea se află în haos și la un pas de colaps. Însă lumea și-a găsit refugiul în OASIS, un univers online bazat pe realitate virtuală creat de genialul, dar excentricul James Halliday. După moartea sa, Halliday lasă prin testament întreaga lui avere primei persoane, oricare ar fi aceasta, care va găsi „Oul de Paște” ascuns undeva în OASIS. De aici, o competiție acerbă pornește în toată lumea. Wade Watts intră în amețitoarea cursă fantastică și devine unul dintre cei mai vânați utilizatori, după ce reușește să treacă primul de indiciul inițial.

Un casier bancar (Ryan Reynolds) descoperă că este de fapt un jucător de fundal într-un joc video de tip lume deschisă și decide să devină eroul propriei sale povești.
