Молодой талантливый нейрохирург Рекс Мартин соглашается на уговоры своего приятеля Джима Рестона и проводит не совсем законную экспериментальную операцию на мозге ученого-математика Холси, пациента одной из закрытых психиатрических лечебниц. Операция эта должна либо подтвердить, либо опровергнуть не завершенные, пока еще лишь теоретические разработки в области психических заболеваний (в данном случае — паранойи), которыми занимался доктор Мартин. Проблема в том, что Джима Рестона интересовала формула, которую знал только математик Холси, и возможность «извлечь» ее из мозга больного ученого, а хирург Рекс Мартин пустился в исследования галлюцинаций, маний, фобий, то есть всего, чем он профессионально занимался. Если бы он только знал, к чему приведет вся эта затея с экспериментальной операцией!..
