The action takes place in Thessaloniki, where Cande, the son of the Prilep pilgrim, deceives his father and takes 3000 altans for trade, but spends them on his mistress Fatime. The plot begins when his father, Aji Jankula, comes with his servant Sekula to look for Cande and teams up with Itar Pejo, a servant of Yashar Bey, who also longs for Fatime.

Brothers and their sister come to their native village on their deceased father's burial. Each of them has own plan of taking particular area of property, but in the will their father left behind it is stated they can use the lot only together. They leave the village in disappointment.

These prisoners are then transported to Asia Minor, enduring severe hardships and humiliation through the desert, with many perishing along the way before reaching their final destination in October 1908.
