Ciao Bella Ciao

Ciao Bella Ciao 2002

"Ciao Bella Ciao" was produced in reaction to the score of the Front National in the first round of the French presidential elections in 2002. The montage is structured from shots of Marseille and its surroundings, where Laurence Rebouillon grew up. Ciao Bella Ciao was shot in Super 8 and kinescoped in 35mm, using tests of Super 8 negative film and rushes from her previous Super 8 films. This film evokes memories of a homosexual love breakup and draws up an observation of the recurring racism of the petty bourgeoisie of Marseille. The text scrolls in a voice-over, to an aria from the Marriage of Figaro played on the piano ...

This documentary examines the history and current reality of Toronto’s Flemingdon Park. Now a subsidized housing project, it was built in 1961 as a trendy urban utopia. A decade later it was sold, and Flemingdon became home to refugees and new immigrants. Once a model of urban planning, Flemingdon Park's flip side is a history of violence and racism that residents have fought to overcome. Beijing Suburb

Beijing Suburb 2002

From Variety: "Guaranteed to never screen in any legit mainland Chinese venue due to its daring depictions of rebellious artistic protest as well as explicit sexuality, Hu Ze’s “Beijing Suburb” is a quietly masterful work portraying really struggling artists. This remarkable case of art imitating life observes a tiny community of painters and various multimedia artists — social critics all — operating clandestinely in a courtyard-style building in the capital’s outskirts. Hu’s film itself is clandestine, in the manner it reveals the hardships these artists must endure, in its quiet advocacy for the artists’ position, and also in its strong erotic content, carried to an extent comparable in the region only to South Korean cinema. Brave fests should do everything they can to secure a print, as difficult as that might be."
