Hlavnou obeťou je tu Truman, ktorého život, identita i vzťahy sú obetované pre zábavu iných ľudí. Ľudia na celom svete sledujú príbeh jeho života od jeho narodenia, 24 hodín denne. Truman postupom času začína registrovať, že ľudia v jeho okolí konajú pričasto až príliš neprirodzene a iracionálne a začína chápať, že svet okolo neho nie je tým skutočným svetom. Jeho túžba po skutočnom a slobodnom živote napokon prerastie do niekoľkých pokusov o únik z tohto sveta. Posledný pokus sa mu stáva takmer osudným.

Film rozvíja vtipný a zaujímavý nápad: ako by sa asi zachovali tí, ktorých tváre sú dôverne známe z televíznych obrazoviek a sú divákmi obdivovaní pre mimoriadne osobné hrdinstvo a schopnosť rozhodovať sa v stresových situáciách. Predstavujú hrdinov, ktorí sú doslova nabití znalosťami a skúsenosťami, ktoré bežnému smrteľníkovi jednoducho unikajú. Lenže v skutočnosti sú to len ľudia. Pred kamerou dokázali svoje role sugestívne interpretovať, ale keď dôjde na lámanie chleba, teda na skutočnú cestu do vesmíru, premenia sa v hŕstku egocentrických, žiarlivých jedincov, len sotva schopných najmenšieho rizika.
