Príbeh filmu sa začína zvláštnym, až nadpozemským momentom, keď počas letnej búrky na horskej ceste mladý umelec James Sunderland stretáva svoju osudovú Mary Crane. O chvíľu sa však z tohto opojného sna – romantizovanej spomienky na rozbitý život – prebudí na podlahe miestneho baru. Po menšom rozruchu ho vyhodia a hneď nato mu volá jeho znepokojená terapeutka. Odporučí mu oddych, ale James má iné plány. Neskôr v ateliéri, zlomený žiaľom a alkoholom, nachádza pod dverami ručne písaný lístok: Mary ho prosí, aby sa vrátil do miesta, ktoré kedysi nazývali domovom – Silent Hill. Niečo sa stalo. James neváha a vyráža. Vstupný tunel do mesta je zapečatený, no on pokračuje pešo cez lesný chodník a cintorín, zatiaľ čo z oblohy padajú popolavé vločky. Tak sa začína jeho zostup do prázdneho, postapokalyptického pekla – do labyrintu vlastnej mysle aj veľmi skutočnej nočnej mory. Na ceste za milovanou Mary sa mu postupne zjavujú desivé stvorenia Silent Hillu – Armless, Pyramid Head a ďalší.

Historická freska zachytáva niekoľko epizód zo života maliara ikon Andreja Rubľova. Prostredníctvom portrétu tohto génia podáva pôsobivý obraz ruskej spoločnosti v 15. storočí, v období poznačenom tatárskymi vpádmi, náboženským dogmatizmom a epidémiami. Mierny a citlivý Andrej Rubľov je svedkom búrlivých udalostí drancovania a napokon aj víťazstva nad tatárskou Zlatou Hordou. Sám však nedokáže vo svete poznačenom surovosťou a utrpením tvoriť a tak sa rozhodne pre sľub mlčania. Film je pôsobivou reflexiou o zmysle a význame umeleckej tvorby, o konfrontácii umelca a reality.

Van Goghove práce, ale aj jeho pohnutý osud a záhadná smrť, inšpirovali tisícky ďalších autorov a sú predmetom živej odbornej diskusie aj 128 rokov po jeho smrti. Filmový projekt, prvý svojho druhu na svete, bol nakrútený kombináciou hraného filmu a animácie originálnych olejomalieb. Presnejšie 66 960 originálnych olejomalieb vytvorených 125 umelcami z celého sveta podľa 94 pôvodných van Goghových diel. Slovami tvorcov, rozložené obrazy by dokázali pokryť celý Londýn alebo Manhattan. Predlohou pre animované obrazy boli okrem malieb i hrané scény so skutočnými hercami. Scenár vznikol na základe 800 van Goghových listov adresovaných predovšetkým jeho bratovi. Príbeh vrcholí v júni 1890, kedy sa van Gogh lieči z depresií, postrelí sa do hrudníka a o dva dni neskôr, vo svojich 37 rokoch na následky zranenia umiera. Všetky okolnosti jeho smrti však neboli dodnes objasnené....
