Píše sa rok 1944 a nemecký nadporučík Clemens Forell odchádza vlakom z Bavorska na východný front. Na stanici sa lúči s rodinou a manželka mu pritom oznámi, že čakajú ďalšie dieťa. Forell sľubuje, že sa do Vianoc vráti, ale namiesto toho je ako vojnový zajatec v Sovietskom zväze odsúdený na 25 rokov nútených prác v gulagu na najvýchodnejšom cípe Sibíri. Forell je s mnohými ďalšími nemeckými zajatcami transportovaný vlakom v neľudských podmienkach na Sibír a dopravený do gulagu, kde ťažia v baniach. Už po príchode do gulagu je konfrontovaný so zástupcom veliteľa gulagu. Forell spomína na svoju rodinu a keď sa mu naskytne príležitosť na úteku, využije ju. Bola to však nastražená pasca a Forell aj ostatní väzni sú za to tvrdo potrestaní. Forellovi sa však čoskoro naskytne ďalšia príležitosť k úteku, a to vďaka pomoci nemeckého doktora, ktorý tu ošetruje chorých a ranených. Pomocou neho sa mu útek podarí a pre Forella tým začína strastiplná púť cez celú Sibír domov.
