Pisalo se je leto 1402 in časi so zahtevali junaka, ki bo novo upanje ne le za navadne ljudi, ampak tudi za vladajočega kralja Vaclava IV. Kmalu je bil vpoklican v kraljevo službo in sprejel je še eno občutljivo nalogo – ugrabiti mora zaročenko Katherine lorda Roserberga, da s tem prepreči njegov vzpon na prestol. Sprva se to ni zdela posebej težka naloga, a srečanje s prelepim dekletom v pogumnem Janu vzbudi upanje na »prepovedano« ljubezen. Neizbežno se zapleta ne le v visoko politiko, temveč je tudi na preizkušnji svoje zvestobe in lastne moči. Njegove vrednote so omajane do temeljev, a nima druge izbire, kot da se bori...
