Kamena doba. Skupina opic v prisotnosti skrivnostnega črnega obeliska odkrije uporabo orodja kot orožja in inteligenco poveže z nasiljem. Leto 1999. Na Luni astronavti odkrijejo nov črni obelisk. Zgodba se dogaja nekaj generacij po Cezarjevi vladavini. V tem svetu so opice prevladujoča živeča vrsta na Zemlji in živijo v harmoniji, človeška rasa pa je močno okrnjena in živi v senci opic. Medtem ko novi tiranski vodja opic gradi svoj imperij, se ena izmed mlajših opic poda na mučno potovanje, zaradi katerega podvomi v vse, kar je vedel o preteklosti ter mora sprejeti odločitve, ki bodo določile prihodnost tako opic kot ljudi.

Dr. Ira Kane je nekdanji vladni uslužbenec in znanstvenik, ki so ga po nekem sramotnem dogodku izobčili v nepomemben javni kolidž v Arizoni. Ira zabija čas s prijatelji in svojim sodelavcem, profesorjem geologije Harryjem Blockom (Orlando Jones), ko ga mladi in naivni gasilski vajenec Wayne (Seann William Scott) pozove, naj preišče ozemlje, kamor je padel skrivnostni meteor. Dr. Kane prvi odkrije vesoljske slepe potnike na padlem meteorju, ki se nenavadno hitro razvijajo. Tako odkritje je nemogoče prav dolgo prikrivati in prav res se kmalu pojavijo uradne oblasti – v obliki čedne, a strogo za službo zavzete epidemiologinje Allison (Julianne Moore), ki prevzame primer.
